Frequently Asked Questions
J-1 Work & Travel:
Q: What is a J-1 Work & Travel visa?
A: The J-1 Work & Travel visa allows international students who are currently enrolled in a university, college or vocational school to work in the United States for up to 4 months during the official school vacation.
Q: I am an agent with students interested in working in the U.S. during their school vacation. What do I need to do as an agent to apply for J-1 Work & Travel program on behalf of my clients?
A: As a new agent, you will first need to sign an agreement with EDI. You will then become responsible for correspondence with each applicant, collecting the necessary documents for visa application from the applicant, and sending EDI all the paperwork and payment on time.
Q: Do applicants need to come to the United States to have a host company interview?
A: No. EDI will set up telephone interviews for applicants or face-to-face interviews in their home countries.
Q: How can my students find a place to stay during the program?
A: EDI can assist in arranging housing for program applicants prior to the beginning of the program. Some host companies may provide them housing as well.
Q: Do applicants need to have insurance? How can they apply for insurance?
A: Work & Travel program participants are required to have insurance throughout the duration of the program. EDI can assist them in obtaining insurance upon application.
Q: Can participants extend their stay after completing the program?
A: No. There is a 1-month grace period after completion of the program for program participants to travel within the U.S., but they must leave the country after that time.
H-2B:
Q: What is a H-2B visa and how long is it valid for?
A: H-2B working visa allows internationals to enter the United States temporarily and engage in seasonal employment. The maximum length of time an H-2B visa holder can stay in the U.S. is three years.
Q: Can applicants apply for the H-2B visa on their own?
A: No. A U.S. employer, like one of EDI's Open Position hosts, must sponsor them.
Q: What are the benefits of the H-2B visa?
A: H-2B holders can enter the U.S. for temporary work and enjoy all employee benefits. They can even bring their dependents to stay in the U.S.
Q: What happens if workers lose their positions during the program? Can they still stay in the U.S.?
A: No. Once they lose their position, they lose their visa status and will need to leave the country. However, any problems with employers will be discussed with EDI before dismissal is made.
