Frequently Asked Questions

Before the internship begins:

Q: I am an agent with students interested in EDI’s Internship & English program. What do I need to do as an agent to apply for the program on behalf of my clients?
A: As a new agent, you will first need to sign an agreement with EDI. You will then become responsible for correspondence with each applicant, collecting necessary application documents, and sending EDI all paperwork and payment on time.

Q: Do applicants have to have a high level of English skill to participate?
A: No. Since they will be learning English during the internship program, there are no strict requirements on English skills. However, it is recommended that participants have basic communication skills to work with supervisors and people at the host organization.

Q: What happens if applicants can’t get the position they apply for? Can they apply for other positions?
A: Yes. They may select and apply for different positions from our Open Position List without any charge.

Q: Can interns switch the host organization during the program if there are problems?
A: It depends on the situation. It is advisable that interns consult their supervisors to resolve difficulties. EDI staff will work closely with the intern and the host to reach the best solution for all.

Q: My client’s host organization asked him to submit a Tuberculosis test result before the beginning of the internship program? Can it be done in the U.S.?
A: Yes, it can. We can introduce participants to local clinics close to their internship or school location after arrival.

Q: How can interns find a place to stay during the program?
A: English schools provide housing options, including home-stay, residential hotels, apartments or room-shares. If your clients need housing, please indicate this on the application form and the school will arrange their accommodation for them.

After arrival:

Q: How can interns commute to the English school and host organization without a car?
A: The host organizations and English schools are accessible to public transportation. There will be assistance from the school during orientation.

Before completion of the program:

Q: How can interns extend their stay if they like the internship or want to take English classes longer?
A: Participants can extend by simply speaking with their school or calling EDI. They will not be required to obtain a visa as long as they stay in the U.S. for less than 3 months. (This is called the Visa Waiver program for international visitors) However, if they wish to participate in this program for 3 months or longer, then they will need to obtain an F-Visa (Student Visa) with the I-20 issued by their English schools.
